Welcome to my blog. Follow me on my adventures in Leilanni Land – it’s all things creative, fashion, sewing, crafting, sometimes serious biz, but mostly, good vibes and fun.
In the beginning. In my early days as a designer, I would surf the Internet for any info I could find on young designers who were "making it". I needed to know EVERYTHING – how they got started and what kept them going. I’m hoping that this blog can be an inspiration for any aspiring young designer, artist or anyone curious about this industry. In this blog I’ll share with you my workshops, some tutorials and all my creative inspiration. You’ll get sneak peeks of new projects, artist collaborations and interviews. I’ll also share some nuggets of wisdom and personal dos and don’ts. Real talk.
My start in fashion. I’ve had many types of fashion related jobs - designing for others’ ready-to-wear collections, designing luxury bridal gowns, making costumes for artists, styling and producing a line of screen printed t-shirts that went viral (ahem, the Drake’s emoji tattoo kind), I even had an online vintage store at one point.
My real start came in 2009, selling my designs on Etsy. I was making everything from turbans, to hand dyed necklaces, to Mullet T dresses – to name just a few. I wanted my clothing to be eco-friendly and sweatshop free while not looking Granola-ish. ‘Cause being good to the earth is cool.
My roots. My mom is the Ultimate crafter - everything from crazy quilts to folk art paintings to needlepoint to cake decorating to basket making to gardening - she's the Filipina Martha Stewart. My dad is an Elvis Impersonator (no joke) and owned a locksmith business – he is a true entrepreneur. Both my sisters are creative. Maylee is an amazing musician and performer. Tanya is an awesome mom, former music teacher and avid crafter.
We are a colorful bunch of characters.
A little about lil' Leilanni. I was the adventurous nature-loving, little bit mischievous, tomboy, creative kind of kid. You would find me in the garden playing with bugs, slugs, bees and worms. A forest surrounded our house, so if I wasn't rescuing a baby animal (or setting traps for my neighbour – sorry Frank), I was making something crafty, writing and illustrating stories, or making movies like the stop-motion Scrooged film with Barbies. I had a wild imagination. In grade school I created a fashion magazine called Fifteen where I took photos of all my friends, styled them and even created all the ads. (Did I mention I was also an art director earlier in my career? But that’s a whole other story…)
In short, I’m super excited to be sharing my world with you. Feel free to comment and let me know if there is anything you’d like to learn, a workshop you think would be awesome, and I always love Posi Vibes!!! So send the good vibes my way.
Thanks for stopping by : )
